Australian Statistics

 

In 2003, 324,000 individuals sustained an Acquired Brain Injury in Australia (ABI & Stroke: Age 0-65+)(AIHW, 2003)

314,300 individuals from the above total required some support as a result of a disabling condition in the form of activity and participation restrictions. (AIHW, 2003)

201,400 required higher-level support due to severe disabling circumstances. (AIHW, 2003)

State statistics: NSW: 69,400; VIC:50,700; QLD: 36,800; WA: 19,300 (AIHW, 2003)

Also - 56% of people with an ABI were more likely to be living in a capital city compared with 44% in the rest of the state. 82% with an ABI related disability stated that their situation was caused by an accident or injury. 81% with an ABI disabling condition also reported a physical/diverse disability; 49% a sensory/speech disability & 36% an intellectual disability. (AIHW, 2003)
